So we all “know” what this is, yes?
1066. Of any date, that any child was ever taught, in any school in the UK, 1066 is probably the best remembered.
What we were not taught though, is that the FIRST recorded (!) as in written down, date that survives for the tapestry is 1463 from the Cathedral of Bayeux – when it was maybe, might have been repaired.
The next recorded date is 1724.
The next – 1729.
So what IS the Bayeux Tapestry and what is it a depiction of?
I am in the middle of reading the NC research of this famous tapestry….
And I don’t want to believe it.
I-don’t-want-to-believe-it.
They have dated the creation of the tapestry at March 15th 1495 and they have uncovered the battle it possibly pictures. Makes sense to me but…..!
I understand their research and this outcome. The methods used etc.
A bigger BUT…it completely invalidates the last 3 years of my life that I spent travelling through mountains and valleys of words about 12th century England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, the Holy Land and on and on.
It is a good job that I believe that nothing we learn is ever wasted.
