During my recent research into the Mamelukes I came across a reference, a book from the early 16th century written by a German nobleman about his voyages to Egypt.
It’s not often that I can find said sources on line but…I found this one inside another book.
Collection of Voyages and Travels.
The whole thing is interesting but Baumgarten’s story begins on page 387 of the PDF.
What struck me immediately was his intro…”

Basically, Venice is beautiful but it has produced nothing “for the service of man.”
Mmmnn. Intriguing.
If you read this journal, keep in mind (I’ve said this before) in this era the words TURK/TURKISH/MAMELUKE actually mean Tartarian.
A lot of fisty fights going on here between the Venetians and the “Turks.” :o)
PDF – The Travels of Martin Baumgarten
OK. The atmos is playing merry mayhem with my connection. I will try to load the PDF later :o)
