The Marble Emperor

Marble relief of a double-headed eagle in the Church of St Demetrios in Mystras, marking the spot where Constantine XI was crowned.

What is/was The Marble Emperor?

According to Wiki :

“The King asleep in mountain (D 1960.2 in Stith Thompson’s motif index system)is a prominent folklore motif found in many folktales and legends. Thompson also termed it as the Kyffhäuser type. Some other designations are: king in the mountainking under the mountain, or sleeping hero.”

King in the Mountain

An impressive list of names. But I’m only interested in Constantine XI Palaiologos at the moment.

Emperor Constantine is a bit of a ‘missing link,’ to many subjects already covered here.

When they are connected together…we’ll see what it all means :o)
