Marie de Rohan was regularly “exiled” from France. All her lands were sequestered by Richelieu. One of her exiles was a very long journey with two faithful servants from Tours to Madrid, where she spent a lot of time with Anne of Austria’s brother, the King of Spain. And his (Felipe’s) wife, who was sister to Anne’s husband, Louis XIII of France. Yes. Complicated stuff.
Anyhoo – Marie was in Madrid long enough for Velazquez to paint her portrait (or maybe not?)
I used the maybenot portrait as the cover for my novel.
