Medlar vs Meddler : The Original Goodly Rotten Apple?

This is a fruit that I’ve come across MANY times in my historical research so I know a little bit about it.

This is why I’ve always wanted to …taste…and grow medlars.

I know that it has to be eaten rotten or bletted. Which – strangely – means that it goes rotten and the ripens (?)

WikiSourceduJour : Medlar

P.S. And I don’t need forgiveness from anyone to quote Shakespeare here.

From Timon of Athens :

“The middle of humanity thou never knewest, but the extremity of both ends. When thou wast in thy gilt and perfume, they mock’d thee for too much curiosity; in thy rags thou know’st none, but art despised for the contrary. There’s a medlar for thee; eat it”

Adam and Eve and Original Sin, anyone?

Or let’s try Hamlet :
