I’ve been thinking a lot about pretty, witty Nell and the Historical Timeline.
I come from my research into the generation before. Charles I Stuart, Henriette Marie etc.
1660 and the Restoration of the Monarchy in UK via the eldest son of the two above named.
Cardinal Richelieu had it written in their marriage contract that HM’s children (she was French Catholic) would be under the control of ‘her’ people until a certain age. So they all grew up under strong Catholic influence. When 1660 came Charles II Stuart had a choice to make – Catholic/Protestant. King/Exiled King.
Fast forward to his death and his brother, James II Stuart. Who chose Catholicism and got kicked off the throne pdq! To be replaced by William of Orange, a Dutch Protestant.
OK. All the above is MS History. As is the history of the Orange Order of Ulster.
Check it out!!!
Being an outsider in Northern Ireland (twice) we knew to stay home on the 12th July every year. There were always ructions :o(
P.S. I’m wondering if there REALLY were such battles as the Boyne and the Seige of Derry – or was it all a plan to split North from South/Catholic from Protestant?
Nasty, devious. Cruel!
