A Pope. An Abacus. An Astrolabe.

IKIW : Sylvester II

The book I’m reading right now is proving to be a labour of patience.

I’m only on page 2 and already a bit confused.

It starts talking about a French scholar who was a “master” of mathematics, astronomy, Arabic texts, science etc etc.

In the year 999, he became Pope Sylvester II.

Ooh. That made several writers/teachers VERY unhappy.

William of Malmesbury called him “nefarious” and portrayed him as a coward.

At this rate – I’ll finish reading by the year 2499. Or thereabouts :o(
