The Nine Worthies

The Nine Worthies were :

Jewish – King David, Joshua the Patriarch and Judas Maccabeus

Pagan – Hector of Troy, Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar

Christian – Charlemagne, King Arthur, Godfrey of Bouillon

There are many renditions of these characters but it’s believed that they first appeared in picture form in 1312.

I’m intrigued by the coats of arms given to each. Look carefully.

Why does King David have a Gaelic harp?

And Julius Caesar the Tartarian Eagle?

And…….!?!
