Have y’all grown up with a man who worked in a Steel Works and had molten steel run over his legs?

It caused 4th degree burns.

My step-grandad, George, was that man. It happened in the early 1960’s and I grew up SEEING that his wounds were so severe that he had a nurse come EVERY DAY to dress those wounds for 20 years and more.

I’d sit there (being a curious child) and watch her unbandage and expose the HUGE holes in his legs. Some went down to the bone!

A year before he died in his late 60’s, he had both legs amputated…about 25 years after the accident.

I’ll not show pictures.

I NEVER heard him complain. And he always let me sit quietly beside him, day after day as his wounds were exposed.

To this day – I cannot even imagine the pain he went through :o(

George was a beautiful man who taught me many things. How to garden. Fly Tying. Utter Stoicism. The beauty of silent aloneness. Acceptance. Calm. LOVE.
