It is many years since I have looked in this book. It starts with a map dated c450 B.C. and the last is dated 1962.
The World according to Herodotus in 450 B.C. has only six names on it. Europa, Scythia, Asia, Libya, Arabia and India.
Looking through for a “certain name” I’ve found some astonishing things.
This region is not shown in it’s entirety until 200 A.D. where it is unnamed. By 526 A.D. the maps just say Slavonic People. In 900 A.D. it is split between the Russian Federation and the Khazar Empire. In 1100 it’s called Kingdom of Rus. In 1250 it’s the Khanate of The Golden Horde.
Only in 1490 is the word Tartary used. Also 1529/1588-1650. Then afterwards it’s The Russian Empire, USSR, Soviet Union etc!
My copy is a 9th edition. I wonder how many changes were made from the 1st edition !
