“Come Ben” : A Short Lesson in Scottish Greetings

What do you do if you go to the Highlands of Scotland and get greeted with “Come Ben?”

Well. You say, “Thank you.” And then walk into their home.

But why “ben” and not “in?”

It’s all to do with the architecture of the Butt and the Ben.

In Ye Olden Days, the butt was not a kitchen but a room for the cattle. The ben was the living quarters.

I love the programme below and have learned quite a bit from the series. This episode BLEW me away.

A very fancy pants Butt and Ben in Northumberland :o)
