I WILL admit to missing many of the references within the book. A Study in Scarlet? Dante’s Divine Comedy? Milton’s Paradise Lost? Gone With the Wind? Moby Dick? The Hunchback of Notre Dame?

I once totally shut up one of my customers – a book seller. A specialist in Detective Fiction – who’d asked me, one day, on his weekly Tuesday visit to my shop, if I’d watched the film The 9th Gate.

“Yes,” said I. “But I much preferred the book. The Club Dumas.”
