I’ve been hounded by a thought/theory for days now! So, I’ve done some preliminary research.
The arms above are those of the Earls of Oxford. Two connections : The colours red and yellow and the lone 5-pointed star.
Red and yellow are associated with the Cathars. And MSM tells us that the silver star (the one and only charge on the shield) comes from the Star of Bethlehem and a de Vere being in one of the Crusades.
There was a de Vere who died at Damietta, Egypt in 1221 during the so-called Fifth Crusade. This could have been Robert de Vere, younger brother of the 2nd Earl, Aubrey, who (maybe) died in 1221 but has no connection to the Crusades on WikiRhubarb.
Or it could have been Roger de Vere, illegitimate son of Aubrey.
Even genealogy sources cite both!!!
Next up we have de Veres involved in the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars of the Languedoc (!)
Then – there is the fact that de Veres appeared at Agincourt and had dealings with those who had dealings with Jehanne d’Arc.
And – we have them all over The Authorship Question.
Mmmmn. Oxford. Starfort. Crusade. Cathar. Red & Yellow. There is much more to this family than meets the eye :o)
