Deviant Burials Part 33 (?)

Mmmn.

I’ve just watched the video below and it makes sense.

In Scotland, it is traditional to carry a stone up from the bottom of a hill to place on a cairn at its top. In such a fashion, cairns would grow ever larger. An old Scottish Gaelic blessing is Cuiridh mi clach air do chàrn, “I’ll put a stone on your stone”. In Highland folklore it is recounted that before Highland clans fought in a battle, each man would place a stone in a pile. Those who survived the battle returned and removed a stone from the pile. The stones that remained were built into a cairn to honour the dead.

Cairns are pretty familiar to me. The reasons for them change from country to country.

Almost all “deviant burials” around the world include stones, and it’s been handy for me to see this Scandinavian talk about his own country’s lore.

I personally see the really deviant deviant burials as a spiritual thing too. Not so much in the reincarnation fashion but in the preventative way.

Heads and bodies separated. Arms and legs placed close to the head. Stones in the mouth that protrude like enormous tongues.

These may well be the skeletons of “witches” or “vampires” but I’m not convinced. To me, they speak of those who were deliberately malicious in real life and so were laid to rest in such a way as to prevent their essence/spirit/soul from returning to repeat the same acts and actions on a different generation.

Almost as crazy as this Viking’s ideas ? ? ?

:o)
