Mmmn. Not a fave of mine even though we did this for my EngLit exam.
I prefer the HISTORY behind Chaucer.
He married a girl called Philippa de Roet, who had a sister called Katherine, who had a lover called John of Gaunt, who was a patron of Geoffrey Chaucer and the third son of Edward III, who was the son of Edward II and Isabella the She-Wolf.
After two other marriages and several children by Katherine, John of Gaunt did the decent thing and married her. Three years before he died.
Katherine is better known as Katherine Swynford.
She lived for many years in Lincolnshire and is buried in Lincoln Cathedral (where she married John) along with her daughter Joan.
As a side note : one of John and Katherine’s sons, Henry, Cardinal Beaufort played a huge role in the capture, trial and execution of Jehanne d’Arc.
FACT!!!
Middle English for y’all.
