Castration and Blinding

There’s a theme that runs through all of Middle Ages history. A Very Ugly Theme.

There seems to’ve been an excessive obsession with blinding and castrating men!

This lasted up until the Renaissance – and maybe a little beyond.

Hywel, younger brother of Gruffydd ap Rhys was captured by the Normans in 1098. He spent most of his childhood in prison where they castrated him before the age of 10. Why? Because he was Welsh!

Abelard, of Heloise and Abelard fame, was castrated by Heloise’s family. Why? Because he fell in love with her!

Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy, was imprisoned by his younger brother, Henry I and blinded. Why? Because he was William the Bastard’s Eldest son!

Andronicus I Comnenus was blinded in his right eye and his “family jewels”  messed about with. Why? Because he was the Byzantine Emperor who’d been raised in Russia.
