There are many, MANY reasons why I love John Sullivan’s writing.

But the main one is – every single character that he created was based (in part) on a real person that he’d met in real life.

Almost every single episode of Only Fools was based around a real event that he had witnessed/been told about in real life.

Del and Boycie are perfect examples.
