Way back in time, before council dustmen came to empty your bin every week and we had the full underground drainage system for flushing loos, people would dig a hole in the ground outside to throw all their household waste in. ALL waste! I’m still getting bottles and crockery turning up in my garden that was thrown away in Victorian times.

The hole filled pretty quickly and soon it became a stinking heap of midden (aka shit)
