Samuel Taylor Coleridge

I am rather fond of Sam T Coleridge.

The book that I mentioned yesterday…I’m still re-reading.

It has a lovely quote from STC’s private writings.

He who begins by loving Christianity better than TRUTH will proceed by loving his own sect or church better than Christianity, and ending by loving himself better than all.

Yes. I had to read this a few times too before I understood what he was saying.

We must love ourselves. For if we can’t do that, how can we love others?

Therefore “ourselves” already have the means and don’t need the Church Militant (as Jehanne d’Arc called IT)

We only need the Church Triumphant. Which is neither a building nor a sect nor a religion nor a dogma nor a country nor a creed that dresses up in very expensive clothes and pontiff- i -cates.

That’s what I think anyway. For what it’s worth.
