The Discoverers

Examines the human quest for knowledge and discoveries as it discusses such men as Galileo, Adam Smith, Columbus, Marx, Napoleon, Magellan, Faraday, Freud, Marco Polo, and St. Augustine.

I’ve had this book forever and dip into it now and again.

I dipped in today and found something quite interesting in Book 2, Part IV, 14.

It’s titled A Flat Earth Returns.

On page 111 we have…

While a spherical earth was the basis of Greek cartography, a flat earth was the basis of the Chinese.

Phei Hsui (Pei Xiu) 224 to 271 AD is quite interesting. He made an 18 sheet map of China with rectangular grids. It was “an unprecedented advance in cartography.”

Ancient Chinese maps make “no allowance for a curved earth.”
